Creating social change through market-based solutions
8% GDP growth, US$8 billion in FDI, 20% export growth – these are indicators of the Indian economy’s impressive growth. However, this growth has not been equitable – while a large and growing middle class is benefiting from this boom, there are about 400 million lower income and poor Indians who are not adequately benefiting from the same. Over two thirds of the population is earning only US$1-4 per day and for this group basic services like healthcare, sanitation and education are still largely inadequate.
While the government is trying to help these poorer segments, progress has been slow due to resource constraints, limited fiscal resources, service delivery problems, governance constraints and variability across states. The NGO sector, although broad-based and active, is dominated by small organizations that have yet to reach the scale needed to create significant social impact. However, Monitor sees an interesting potential route to social progress in India — market-based solutions.
Monitor Inclusive Markets was founded in 2006 in order to understand and catalyze activity in the space of market-based solutions. It aims to do this by understanding the business models of market-based solutions currently operating in the B60 space and then driving select, meritorious solutions towards achieving scale and commercial viability, in the process bolstering social progress through local (B60-level) economic and market development.
Within Monitor Inclusive Markets, we are divided into two teams:
- MBS (Market-Based Solutions)
- Affordable Housing
