Affordable Housing
Monitor Inclusive Markets has identified housing as one of the key areas where market based solutions can alter the social and economic landscape of the country and become a powerful route to social progress.
In the absence of a systematic institutional support mechanism, there is very little supply of affordable housing in India for the lower and middle income segments. Through its work for private sector clients, NHB, IFC and World Bank, Monitor recognized that current models were not working for the low income households and conducted extensive research across urban India, in the process involving international and local experts to develop innovative solutions and business models.
Following interviews with over 1000 customers, 50 developers and 20 financial institutions, Monitor developed a set of potential solutions that account for the customers’ ability to pay and address the concerns of lenders and developers.
As part of its housing initiative, Monitor is in the process of facilitating 8 to 10 pilots across India. We believe that this will help create housing for 10-30 million families in urban India in the next decade – thereby building a market of over $150 billion.
