Case Studies of Projects We’ve Done

Below are short summaries of projects we’ve done over the last year.
(Client and funder names have been omitted due to confidentiality agreement, where necessary.)

Business Blueprint for Deep Procurement of F&V

A foundation asked us to develop a “business blueprint” to determine the feasibility for a 3rd party player to create a deep procurement channel that sources Fruits & Vegetables (F&V) largely from small to medium sized farmers and sells to different buyers (i.e., grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, etc.).

The project required conducting interviews with buyers, industry experts, distribution channel nodes, and visiting urban/rural ‘mandis’ to understand the F&V supply chain, the buyer purchase criteria for each buyer segment and the selling criteria for farmers.

Expansion Strategy for a Low Cost Maternal Care Services Hospital

A low-cost maternal care services hospital in South India is able to provide quality service to women at 1/6th the price of a private clinic. After operating 6 hospitals successfully, they wanted to expand to 100 hospitals over the next 5 years. We helped the management think through:

  • Their expansion strategy (i.e., if they should roll out nationally, by region or by state)
  •  Selection of  cities to enter first
  •  How to determine the number hospitals per city they should have

Distribution of household water treatment and storage (HWTS) systems through Microfinance Institutions (MFI)

An international aid organization wanted to promote the distribution of household water systems through MFI channels in order to increase the use of clean drinking water among the urban and rural poor.  The project required us to interview over 300 MFI customers across various cities to understand the:

  •  Typical customer income and expenditure
  •  Drivers behind pricing-based decisions
  •  Customers view on taking an additional loan to purchase a HWTS

In addition to the above, we determined where in the value chain would soft funding be most beneficial to increasing product uptake  and ensure long-term usage.

Development of Organization Strategy and 10-year Business Plan for a new Affordable Housing Initiative

One of India’s leading entrepreneurs looking to enter the Affordable Housing market in India approached us to help him develop a 10-year business plan and an organizational strategy for building 1 million housing units.

Monitor helped by developing a operating model, an organizational structure and a 10-year financial model for the proposed business.

Building a scalable low income housing company

A premium real estate developer wanted to enter the low income housing space.  Monitor supported the developer in entering the low income housing business and provided targeted support for its first project in Ahmedabad. Specifically, we helped the developer:

  • Design the marketing and sales processes
  • Improve site and unit layouts and pricing for the units
  • Create of an organizational structure and a business plan that will allow scale development across multiple geographies
